There is one well known kind of cat that has developed into group hunters with reasonably complex social structures. Its not too implausible that some lion-like creature could get selected for intelligence, perhaps to coordinate larger groups in an evolutionary arms race against both other groups of the same species, and other threats such hyena like creatures.
