For me, the guardian spirits giving you a bunch of unique abilities, like how some of the human characters had in the previous games. For example, Yaskue's spirit had a move where it would jack up his poise, one that would boost his strength, while another would have him charge ahead with bolts of lighting from his guardian spirit trailing behind him.
