OCs can work, but they need to have direction and purpose. An OC who expands on a portion of the world/lore of a story based on the writer's ideas is better than an OC that is just there to be there. It's tough, but doable.
Also OCs are good for niche fetish work. There's some dirty ao3 fics that exist in the original works
