A sword that thin and straight would be a thrusting weapon. Large slashes would risk bending or breaking the sword. The katana gets away with it because it is a curved blade that is used with a slicing motion, however a katana can still break or bend if it is used against something hard enough. MCs sword could be used to inflict small fatal wounds pretty well if wielded right. However it's a magic sword so who cares.
