Here's a pretty extreme example, it's games from the last 52 weeks in gold and gold tonpuu from a /jong/er. Sample size is 283 hanchans and 177 tonpuu, they play very differently and I think these results reflect that. If your goal is to rank up as fast as you can tonpuu is the way to go but if your goal is to improve tonpuu is not going to prepare you for gold hanchans let alone jade, partially because of the differences and partially because the players who play hanchans are likely to be better since it's lower variance. Obviously there's nothing wrong with playing tonpuu if that's just what you enjoy or due to time constraints or whatever but it's not going to prepare you for league.
