It's hard as hell to get a REAL unique art style approved for major game development these days because it means you can't cheat by reusing existing assets from other things, and the third-world asset farm companies everyone uses can't help as easily. One of the souliest games we've had in years is Kunitsugami partly because they handmade all of the assets in real life and then scanned them in. Psychonauts 2, while flawed, is absolutely gorgeous due to working hard to faithfully replicate Peter Chan's drawn concept art.
So instead when a game dev goes for a "unique style" it's often just the same shit you've seen before with a cel shader pasted on top. And again, draw distance does a lot.
