Being attracted to detailed illustrations is a different mental process than stylized illustrations to me. If you take out the fact that the Japanese have a higher quality output on average, and just take the best of both for a second, the appeal of the stylized image is you are given more room to interpret, it activates the imagination. Detailed anime style is more human, it has its own appeal, more literal and anatomical. Simplified designs can be pushed much farther in fanart or the imagination. Take Velma for example, she’s been interpreted as a fat girl, a sweatery titcow, a sexy librarian, a plain jane, a shortstack, you name it. On the other hand, something like Asuka is Asuka, she’s specific, tangible. I enjoy both, not all of both, but both done well.
