Nah, that just keeps the costs down. The original game at this point is effectively just advertising, as there's no way it actually makes a profit considering how cheap it is to actually play. It's still alive because it has a massive cast of well designed characters, and because the design spectrum is so broad it's impossible to not have at least one character you like. Also, a metric ton of merch, and even if you don't care for every character some of the merch lines like the mochis have a collectible feel to them so you want to try to get them all. Plus all the multimedia stuff as well as the historical aspect, museums and preservationists fucking love it because the fans are willing to make sure the actual objects the anime boys are based off of are looked after.
