It's a half-ambition and that was fine in vacuum, because giving her the image of a strong brother is enough for him. Meeting Luffy changed that, because he has to be more for the rest of his family now, especially with what's happened to Pudding, Linlin and Perospero. As with Crocodile, he'll get his moment to growth when it's time to go save Pudding.
