The best way to level up your gamer skills is to game. Learn enemy patterns and levels, accept that you'll eat shit. Eventually you'll develop skills based on enemy patterns that transfer to other games. If you start getting frustrated maybe it is time to put the game down for the day.

Most important thing, don't expect to start a game and beat it in the session you first sit with it.
