I'm convinced this plot point is just a heavy reference to Saya No Uta, which is literally a game about a man that sees the entire world and all people as disgusting flesh monsters, except for 1 cute girl that turns out to actually look like a monster to anyone normal. it's just too specific of a plot point for them to have not realized it's the main plot of an extremely popular visual novel.
