Yule in paganism was not on the 25th of December, that came from Christianity with the Norwegian Christian King Håkon Håkonsson, who made it law that Yule would be celebrated not on Hogmanay but with the Christian holy day of Christmas. This was recorded by Snorri Sturluson (who lived in 1179–1241 AD), who also recorded the Viking sagas. Much of the information we have on the Vikings and know about them (including Norse mythology) was due to him.
If pagans want to celebrate Yule again, they should do it in the traditional pagan way, on the pagan dates, rather than stealing and cherry-picking what they like from Christian Christmas while calling it "pagan" Yule.
The painting "Birkebeinerne" by Knud Bergslien from 1869 shows the Birkebeiners Torstein Skevla and Skjervald Skrukka transporting the little Håkon Håkonsson, the king's son, to Nidaros in 1206 AD.
