That makes sense, prior to that each mon has individual power spikes that encourages swapping them around. Once you have a strong core past that I could see little motivation to keep swapping. It also helps that all the new etrian variants seem pretty strong (some arguably overtuned) which most people are gonna try out.

Yeah it doesn't really make sense to deride it for any reason whatsoever. There's no skill in grinding and you can't use it to overlevel anyway. Don't like it? Don't use it. Maybe they're a clover fanboy that thinks it's funny to softlock your game if it detects you using rare candies. Either that or they think it means the game is one of those "hardcore kaizo" romhacks that's meant for autists, I see people shit on stuff like radical red all the time even though it's not that hard of a game. Also normal and picnic modes are right there for them.

True, I was a bit harsh on EO4 there especially, which in fact does have items that level people up instantly anyways. I'm just disappointed that it's way too easy to be overlevelled in that game which means a lot of the game is just boring difficulty wise. For example I wish the game could just tell you what level you're "supposed" to be at for each boss so then you can have the intended experience fighting them instead of being constantly paranoid that you've been fed too much XP for that point in the game.
