The bronze plaque with that written on was installed in 1903 and has nothing to do with the statues original meaning, which was a middle finger from France to England. The poem it was written by Emma Lazarus (jewish) and was placed in the plinth of the statue at the instistanc of the author's friend Georgina Schuyler (also jewish).
