Shielding is temporary, and in the early game you mostly die from a thousand mob shots over 3 minutes. You are better off with a healer, but the better shielders are the one with long shields like sShizuko (30s) (welfare). Apart from the bosses where shielding is a forced mechanic, there are some bosses with big telegraphed attacks you may want to shield, but the game is so fast right now, your best bet is to just unga bunga it.
