The reality of shields is that they're pretty damn difficult to break in real life. The fact that many manuals go into great detail about how to fight around and opponent's field, or displace it is testament to that. Everything else is going to be abstraction, so you just got to figure out what you can tolerate.
The real limiting factor of a shield should be the shield itself, which is a little difficult to abstract depending on construction rules. Physically, big shields are a bitch and half to carry and are completely impractical outside of battlefield conditions. Socially, a guy who's wandering around with a full-sized pavaise or tower shield who is not marching with the army for a siege should be as weird and uncomfortable to see as somebody wearing full riot gear or carrying an AR modernly and other players should react appropriately.
