my guess is that a lot of the current generation of adults growing up watched shit like for example, Pokemon when they were kids and had a crush on Misty, May, or whatever other girl that was on screen at the time, and as they got older, they never really grew out of that childhood crush, who still looks like the same 10 yr old girl they were 10-20 years ago and with the wide boom of the internet, these people were able to meet other adults that never let go of their first fictional infatuation either which ended up normalizing it in their minds, and like most internet communities, went through a slow degredation where it's members get into weirder and weirder shit over time before branching out into other communities trying to normalize their beliefs elsewhere.

It's why a lot of fetishes have suddenly become more widespread in the current day, like feet, furries, or transvestites.
