The problem here really is bigger than narrative styles. Gritcore is not anything new or forgotten either: there was a resurgence in popularity of The Trench Crusade, there's The Forever Winter, Frostpunk was popular enough etc. Arguably even things like Iron Lung are gritty to absurd levels.
What's gonna be "new", I feel, is the resurgence of things that are "well-researched". Think of how Planescape: Torment or Morrowind drew from real mythologies and beliefs to aid their writing. There's gonna be a boom in worlds you'd have an entire book behind just explaining its history and lore. Not even ARGs, just straight up literary sources out in the open. Either that, where you tap into new sources of "new" itself or endless "hey remember this thing from your childhood" memory incest.

Ville Kallio is born in 1990, so I nominate Cruelty Squad. I think he said that he watched Robocop when he was 6 and you can feel that. Just a world that is malicious to you, things that are alien to life, streams of mentally unwell information into your brain. I loved his inspirations from Bataille, though. Interwar philosophy is incredibly underrated.
