More than 20 real estate properties in Vienna may be auctioned off in favor of Ukraine's state-owned gas company Naftogaz. The company has secured compensation for losses caused by Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, according to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard.

Following the 2014 annexation, Ukraine demanded compensation from Russia. In 2023, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in Ukraine's favor, and the decision can now be enforced. However, the procedure is not yet complete - the court ruling must first be officially delivered to Russia. After that, Moscow will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.

According to Naftogaz's press release, the arbitral tribunal awarded the company $5 billion in compensation. The properties in Vienna would cover only a small portion of that amount. The company estimates the value at €120 million.

"Similar legal proceedings are underway in other countries as well. Sooner or later, Russia will pay for everything," Naftogaz CEO Serhii Koretskyi said.
