I was trying to find more info on a story of how US soldiers identified location of enemy units (played by Italians) during an exercise by the smoke that rose when all Italians were making coffee in the morning and found this archive instead: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/declassified_194081.htm
As for the story, I guess it's an urban legend after all.
