One book I personally enjoyed reading was ,,Woyzeck" from Georg Buechner. A stageplay, unfortunally unfinished, but the open ending actually works in its favour dealing with the Protagonist's descent into madness (in Germany it also often gets jockingly compared to Works like ,,American Psycho" or "Falling down" because of the similarity in themes). I don't know if there is an English version out there, if you insist, I can search for it. There is also the movie adaption which faithfully (altough with some historical inaccuracies which are irrelevant in the larger scheme of things) translates the story between the different mediums.
Alternativly, there is also ,,The Visit" by Friedrich Duerrenmatt. Also a German stageplay, but nonetheless very nice to read. To my knowledge there is an English Version for free on the internet.
