What I can tell is that 4chan used to be a lot less political and it became way more political after /pol/ was created. The evolution towards/stormfront/ was inevitable given the shock value and the way it countered many of the bullshit narratives of the Western establishment. People forget that a lot of the early GamerGate sentiment was anti-political, they wanted "politics out of video games", but the culture war crowd ultimately won.
