The diaspora in the west who proudly wave the cope flags are the former high-ranking colonial administrative staff who were rolling in the money under the former colonial regime, lost everything in the war and were forced to work doing laundry, washing cars and working in roach-infested ethnic restaurants when they escaped. To them the cope flags are a symbol of a bygone era when they were near the top of the pecking order in society.
