Bill Colby allegedly told Decamp(I trust Decamp but there are two other sources that tell near identical tellings) that he regretted two things. Both done with the bad excuse of fighting commies.

What happened was cartels of old cliques and family lines/magical orders were on the ground floor of these programs. Over time those part of this cartel has greater control of said programs but also through blackmail and bribery they got greater control of the levers of power in military and civil gov. Eventually something went on either those in the know tried to arrest/thwart cartel power grabbing behind the scenes or the cartel made the move and the key members of gov easily acquiesced to them.

I always was annoyed of the Kennedy hagiography. Still though he had a big enough ego and was blind enough to get monumentally betrayed I think. His assassination was brazen. They rubbed it in the families face with Robert and anyone even slightly aware towed the line.

I think Kennedy was the final straw when this cartel went all in and succeeded. They have continued blackmailing/welcoming aboard individuals from succeeding generations to keep the charade afloat until they had "full spectrum dominance". Then, when they feel utterly safe and feel there is no possible way for anyone or anything to get in their way we will witness through some rinkydink pantomime what has been called the "externalization of the hierarchy".
