You might be conflating obligate herbivorism and vegetarianism here. Being vegetarian is a choice. Being a carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore is a physiological thing. You can't just wake up one day and decide that your body can only effectively digest a certain food source. I agree that the ponies do seem to be omnivorous, though. The amount of eggs that they consume would not be healthy for the horses in our world, and so we must assume that the ponies of Equestria evolved under somewhat different circumstances. They still primarily eat plant matter, but have the ability to consume sustainment levels of animal matter if the need arises. This would be a useful adaptation for a species of normally herbivorous animals if, say, their primary source of food (plants) were to be heavily diminished. Perhaps the wendigos are involved.
