>I have seen this statement on the nuclear blocks in Hungary posted and reposted countless times today. I've decided to give you (and myself) a little more context into the history of the issue.

In the end of August 2022, Hungary announced that it would move on with Rosatom constructing the blocks despite the Russian full-scale invasion into Ukraine. (In May 2022, Finland canceled a similar Russian nuclear power plant project in light of the full-scale war).

Due to various sanctions imposed on Russia in the course of the full-scale war, the project has experienced complications and delays. Then, in November 2024, the United States put a Russian Gazprombank on the sanctions list. This bank performs key financial operations regarding the project from the Russian side (and the Russian money).

Consequently, there were no payments for the project since the end of 2024. Subcontractors were not receiving their payments after completing their work. Although the United States has allowed several countries, including Hungary and Turkey, to pay for Russian gas through Gazprombank in December 2024, no exceptions were made for the Paks project. Thus, it was unclear whether Rosatom would ever be held responsible for any possible delays or failures of executing their part of the project, and all working with Gazprombank could fall under sanctions.

Now, these restrictions have been lifted. According to Minister Szijjártó, construction will proceed on site in Paks and pieces of equipment will be produced in Russia and France. Russia's ties with Hungary and Hungary's energy dependence on Russia will get even stronger.
