This is a case where Murata added rough edges to a young version of a character and made him scummy but this only made the character worse and much lamer.
Similarly, the webcomic version of Suiryu is also much more likeable and enjoyable, despite being less scummy and rough around the edges.
It seems that everything Murata does is always shit no matter which direction he tries to go in.
