I've got such mixed feelings on it.
I play maplestory private servers once a year or so, just to get it out of my system. It was my first MMO, and you never really leave your first MMO. But the company running the official classic servers, Nexon, is such a trashy company. They ran the game into the ground over the course of a decade+, and now them releasing a "classic" server just feels like they're inviting everyone to come back and get scammed all over again. Like they're just restarting the grift. I don't think I'd join a classic server run by nexon in a million years. Not even if it was good. Because if it were good, they'd make it shitty by taking advantage of our fun and charging for stupid shit. Or they'd re-implement cubes or something.

That being said, despite maplestory being this old ass 2D mmo with a f2p monetary system, it still had better social systems in place than XIV did -- which is fucking wild. It had a friends list where if you removed a dude from it, you were gone on their end as well. It had a buddy chat channel, so you could easily broadcast messages to your whole friends list at once. It had guilds with a reason to be in those guilds (guild pq, guild content runs, etc.). Hell, it even told you when your friends logged in. XIV doesn't do any of that shit. In maplestory, if I wanted to do a party quest (basically a long dungeon), I could open my buddy chat log, type "anyone wanna do a PQ?" and that message would get spat out to every dude online on my friends list. In XIv, if I want to do something with my friends, I have to open the buddy list, wait for it to load everyone, and then -- I guess -- message them one by one. And half the time it'll show someone as online when they're not online at all.

It just pisses me off. And don't even get me started on the early classes and how every class had a unique role that felt good to do in a party, unlike here where everything is "5% dps boost." Sadly the modern one sux.
