I had a similar thought the other night watching a movie set in modern Rome; there was a fifty plus year old woman naked swimming in this typically gorgeous tiled pool. It made me think of how Italians have that odd duality of excelling in creating beauty while simultaneously not shying away from the natural grit of common real life ugliness, as though the two compliment and need each other.
