In the Mother's series part it goes beyond clone and is parody instead. This is more true for Mother 1 as Mother 2 and Mother 3 each get further from it.

I believe that is what he meant as the experimental part. The rolling hitpoint system and autokills on map visible enemies are good systems, DQ didn't get map visible enemies until DQ9 (although it isn't unique to Earthbound and Mother 3, and Mother 1 had random encounters instead like Dragonquest as it was a much closer parody).

On the other hand the west didn't get Dragon Quests back in the day and they still aren't popular so the Dragonquest parody aspects are overlooked which makes it seem more unique in that aspect as well. JRPGs in general weren't seen as popular in the west when Earthbound came out.
