The rainbow is a natural phenomenon. It can't be "taken over" by anyone for it doesn't belong to any group in particular. It's like saying the ancient greeks took over the constellations.
It bothers you that the symbol you like is used by people you don't like, which is telling. Maybe there's a deeper lesson to be learned here somewhere.
