I don't believe so. Most of the people we're talking about wouldn't feel comfortable with the labels or treatment you're describing. In fact, a lot of people identify exactly as you describe and then find themselves longing.

It's still a fringe thing. Isn't the statistic still less than 2%? It's just become more accepted and portrayed. Which also increases the amount of people who are vocally defensive, which I imagine is what you mean by irritating.
Regardless, the cultural norms existed because most people didn't have to think about it. They were either comfortable or didn't have an attachment.
