It was Flame Reaver's backstory, but every time a Phainon kills the flame reaver he inherits the memories. This was literally stated by the looping Phainon that this was his plan, trusting that the Phainon that inherited the memories would continue the loop. Our Phainon killed the Flamereaver, and inherited the memories, TB got pulled in and experienced the same. So it is all a flashback that Phainon is experiencing until Phainon and TB talk on that fishing spot where Phainon entrusts TB to save Amphoreus while he goes to confront Lygus and Nanook.

This happened numerous times, every cycle basically ends with that cycle's Phainon killing the flame reaver and inheriting the memories. Only difference is that TB is now in the current cycle, which lead Phainon to make a different choice
