“How dare you!” Kerim’O’Kas and the Libertans voice their outrage before you can even open your mouth. “Were it not for Mama Snake’s tireless efforts on the front we would all be lost!”

“We are lost! Lost to your dreams!” Indigo Eyes points an accusing talon at the Libertan group to much grumbling.

“Lost to your empty promises!” Indigo Eyes flicks her wing from Shrivya and the Jumpers to Hail and the Red Hand’s direction. “Lost to your bloody-mindedness!”

Hail doesn’t even deign to give a response, continuing his muttered conversation with the young Asian human standing by his side.

The Asandi clacks her beak in your direction in frustration, clearly determined to have a go at everyone present “And lost to your greed!”

You cross your arms and return the Asandi’s glare with your own. You’ve faced down fanged terrors from the Green without flinching, some mouthy beakface with a chip on her wing doesn’t scare you one bit. To her credit, and you don’t hand that out easily to the self-proclaimed ‘prey’ that call themselves pacifists, she doesn’t blink.

“Outrageous! Vile slander against the People’s Hero!” Kerim’O’Kas warbles, affirming shouts from the other Libertans in your defence join the clamour. “You have always doubted! You have been against us from the start! Against the cause!”

As for the rest, the Jumpers and the Red Hand, they’ve got that same range of expressions varying from indifference to distaste and now a few with suspicion at the Asandi’s true loyalties. Most of the executions in the rebel base have been suspected spies and traitors, but not being enthusiastic enough for the fight has also earnt a seat in front of a firing squad. If you were a bit more learned, you might even appreciate the repetition of revolutionary history. It’s not like the Handouts were getting much help anyway, you wonder if Indigo Eye’s outburst is a typical scene at every War Council or if her anguish over the worsening plight of the refugees had led to this breaking point.

“PEACE.” But for once the rumble of the Auxl’s voice doesn’t put an end the escalating exchange of accusations.

Indigo Eyes looks last at Breaker, the sadness in her alien eyes apparent.

“You made this choice for us. Perhaps you look down on those who would have chosen a life of oppression, surviving on the outskirts of the Empire rather than going out in a blaze of glory after spitting in its eye.” The giant Auxl, Breaker of Chains, holds up a massive gnarled hand to forestall any further outcrys from the sidelines. “A pathetic choice it may be. But they will slaughter us all for this, down to the last babe. And who are you to make that choice for them? Are you the Dying Star, who has writ the fate of hatchlings on the skeins of the void between voids?”
