Mirrorsare strongly associated with Hathor. To the Egyptians they were obvious symbols of femininity and fertility. Are woman associated with mirrors because Hathor is, or is Hathor associated with mirrors because women are? As Hathor is a goddess of loveand beauty a mirrorwould be an obvious accessory in many cultures regardless of any other symbolism. A mirror of gold, bronze or copper decorated with images or symbols of Hathor represented the solarHathor by virtue of both its form and its substance. Offering mirrors to Hathor may have symbolised her authority over the sunand moon; as skygoddess the sun and moon are held and directed by her just as a mirror is held and can be used to reflect, in effect redirect, the light of the sun and moon. The shape of the mirror is the shape of the sun disc, another link to Hathor. Mirrorsare also associated with Hathor in the myth of the Destruction of Mankind. When Sekhmetcomes upon the fields flooded with beershe saw that “her face looked beautiful therein” which no doubt softened her anger to some extent.
