>Silent Hill 2 is just a beat-for-beat rip-off of "Lost Highway," to the point that even back in the day people on forums wondered why haven't Konami been sued, it's so blatant.
And the game's plot makes more sense when you see the film, since it has 1:1 copies of James, Mary, Maria, and of course Pyramdi Head. PH in the movie talks so his role is less cryptic. The other big influence is Crime and Punishment, so it's a fusion of those two stories.

It was less popular so flew under the radar but the book and film Phantasms by Dean Koontz (more the book than the film) were a big influence. The moth and a few other things come directly from it, but the very idea of a suddenly abandoned rural town are taken from that.
The film adaption is some hollywood tripe with big stars which doesn't fit the tone that the film should be going for. It's all pretty people.
