Japan objectively made some of the best media to ever be put to print. They still would be if their own government didn't sabotage it.
They treated it as a joke, never thinking "Gross Otaku Shit" carried any value, blind to the reality that it gave them an incredible soft-power edge over ever other country. And like so much of Japanese politics, it got snuffed out because an ancient Japanese boomer who still thinks their 70s industrial manufacturing is still king of the world regulated and banned it out of existence.
