Every time I think of Mainlander I recall the anecdote, reported even on wikipedia as pic related, that he felt his best years were spent in Naples. A city that had always his motto the most unauthentic and gluttonous glorification of life, reaching the level of niggerish savagery, was apparently the best refuge for his irreparable soul. Sadly I have yet to learn german properly to read his works in the original language, but I suspect he had more to say than what he left us, something more characteristic than his simple, unexpressive pessimism. Guess I will never know
