They were basically just early internet memes, people thought it was funny but then it turned into an unironic trend. Aside from that though I think it was a reaction to Gen X's smug sarcasm and just the generally dark state of the world at that time, 9/11 at one end of our adolescent decade and an economic collapse at the other with war in between, and things like dinosaurs were probably people clinging to their childhoods that happened in the '90s before everything went to shit. That's all kind of speculative on my part though since I'm at the older end of the generation and a lot of that stuff was really popular with people a few years younger than me, I think my end had more in common with late Xers than later Millennials in terms of attitudes and cultural influences.
