in the few days before 9/11, i remember a handful of stories from the l.a. times: (1) a palestinian father tried to shield his son, but both were shot and killed by israeli soldiers for throwing rocks at israeli army tanks; (2) the taliban blew up 2 buddhist statues that had been standing for a thousand years; (3) the taliban were kidnapping afghani kids, and then demanding ransoms from the families, and then using that ransom money to buy weapons. one other story was: the taliban assassinated some religious leader, using a cameraman's camera as an explosive device while he (the leader) was being interviewed. these were kinda the first we had ever heard of the taliban
