you're grossly overestimating the time that Romania spent being tied to Russia, either directly or indirectly during Ceausescu
Romanians in high-places, especially in public life, are ALL one huge mafia with just degrees of intensity of relations to Russia, with most of the "brass" being composed of either former communists or the children of communists that have been trained to abuse the system the very way that their parents did
furthermore, the EU and the US did not have any qualms to deal with the very same communists after Romania gave up on "communism", or at least, formally, some of that being understandable because those individuals were the first-up in terms of visibility but no foreign power ever manifested any concerns, even if ethical, over having to still do business with the same communists
even so, reminding of the pipeline, a lot of representatives of EU countries were very happy to maintain favorable relations to Russia under all circumstances with Russia literally giving out bribes

even in this case, it's to no surprised, that they said Dan was a genius, but it turned out that he is not that much of a genius because he didn't really attend some prestigious education in France

these are people that would vote someone if they bar-crawl with them, make funny jokes or look attractive or if they're bribed with free sausages
there are like gangs or clans or people, each supporting some of these individuals, but the preferrence is arbitrary and definitely not on the basis of idealogy
