“You know I never asked to be a fucking hero, right?”
“It is what it is.” Your scowl isn’t directed at Wasp, but he shrugs all the same. “I never did thank you for arguing our case with the boss by the way. I know we didn’t get much more supplies in before the blockade shut tight, but I appreciate the effort.”
“Don’t mention it.”
You know Wasp and the LT have been growing more and more at odds while you’ve been out in the field. You suspect Wasp's possible involvement in getting some actual voidborn smugglers involved a few months back was where it started, several months back when the LT wanted them gone and was overridden by Breaker. Barely a trickle of escaped slaves out compared to the stream that was still pouring in. But it wa something. Nothing ever directly linked Wasp to it, or to the death of the informant that was going to reveal that little side operation, but he wasn’t too cut up over the security risk compared to the LT.
If Wasp is really playing both sides, helping rebels on the downlow while minimising any hurt to the Company, it’s a dangerous bloody game to be doing so with the gigantic Auxl ‘Breaker’ on one side and the iron-willed Lieutenant ‘Boy’ Blue on the other. Maybe he is just a compassionate human being stuck between a rock and a hard place, trying to do what he can. But that won’t help much in the end.
Wasp shifts his weight, carefully considering his words.
“Actually, I’m glad we’ve got this chance to talk. You just might be able to help.” “Look, just hear me out okay?”
“Okay.”
“This ‘plan’, it hinges on the rebels holding out and keeping the Imps busy right?”
“Right.”
“And if the League of Dis is stocked up with the supplies everyone all so desperately needs, they’ll hold out that much longer yes?”
“Sure…” Your frown tells Wasp that you’re both aware said supplies are the subject of Phase One.
“I know, I know. But.” Wasp looks either side, making sure no one is listening in. “If we can get what we need from the Imperials, rather than our own allies, that works out better for everyone.”
“…”
“Hurt the Imps, give the League more of a chance to hold out, cover our escape.”
“You don’t hear me disagreeing.” Your folded arms add the unspoken 'yet'.
“I’ve been working an angle. If we pull it off we could have everything we need, and then some.” Wasp continues steadily, you can tell he’s trying hard not to ramble. “Ammunition, rations, medicine. Maybe even fuel and some parts to get a few of our stray gunships back in action. Sounds good, right?”
“Real good.” You mutter, eyes narrowed. “Forward Airbase Theta. You selling me this means you must have a way in. Just how long have you been sitting on this little gold mine, Wasp?”
