So the Weird Route, as well as a pretty good chunk of Noelle's characterization, is very clearly a homage to both old-school vidya glitches as well as creepypastas in general; my schizotheory is that this homage is going to finally go full circle and the climax of the Weird Route is going to involve doing some kind of increasingly disconnected series of "ritual" steps (that don't follow the usual formula of "kill enough monsters") that end up culminating in summoning/unleashing something that causes all hell to fully break loose - think stuff similar to Missingno, for example:

The actual steps looked at from an in-universe point make no sense:
>Go to the northern part of Viridian City, and watch the Old Man's demonstration on how to catch a Pokémon.
>Fly to Cinnabar Island
>Surf up and down along the east coast of the island until Missingno appears.
But it WORKS - now you're in battle with a complete anomaly that's now altering the fabric of reality; similarly in Chapter 4, if you interpret the weird shit happening in the Light World as being diegetic (the room changing lighting/colors and Kris's hair going crazy in the scene where you force the Thornring on Noelle, as well as the scene with Susie where the screen tints red and the rain literally disappears briefly), then normalcy in the Light World is already starting to crumble. Thus I think once we accomplish those steps in Chapter 5, everything in the world finally goes to shit -
glitched up visuals, randomized alterations of music, level overflowing, the entire framework of the game starts bending to our whims and increasingly corrupts the save file, kind of like how old glitches could genuinely fuck up your game hardware.
