I think I read something along the lines of 75% of people who got a spot in Nat Geo magazine were using an EF 100-400mm lens (and yes I realise some may be using TCs). That may be stats from some years ago, but I think it drives home the point that it's a healthy mix of gear and skill. You can't skill your way to a good bird shot with a 50mm lens, but having 800mm isn't magically going to make everything you shoot look amazing.
