Retarded corporate types think it will make the goys spend more. It won't. And whales don't stay with dead games, so demotivating your goys is actually a really great way to also lose whales.
What manipulative gacha devs are generally wiser to do is make the mode BARELY hard enough to be JUST out of reach.
Whales will get their boners stomping the modes, which appeases them anyway. But it provides just enough bait to try to get people to spend more.
SO is just so far out of reach that no one is incentivized to spend.
IT is starting to get there where it's so overtuned that even clearing all 10 floors without timing out on 1 random shit floor lineup is a real danger.

There's a balance between fleecing and baiting the goys into spending versus demoralizing the goys into quitting.
And if the goys quit, the game dies because whales don't stay with dead games.
