In the series of panels I posted above, the confrontation between Griffith's idealistic egoism and his humanism of mourning the death of his fellow man is dramatically and metaphorically expressed in the form of the contrast between Griffith's pure longing for the “castle” and the sacrifice of the corpses piled up beneath it. And also that for Griffith Guts is a being that transcends both.

This scene is also my favorite in that the clever combination of pictures and prose conveys the vivid emotions of the characters to the reader.
