art fundamentals refers to a category of drawing skills that are generally considered necessary to become a good artist, like shape, color, perspective, anatomy, so on. very popular in youtube tutorials and such. however, since a lot of people associate replicating reality as accurately as possible with being a good artist, a lot of people get stuck on art fundies being the only way to ever do anything.

toby fox has good shapes and thats literally it. other than that his drawings are childish, naive, amateurish. HOWEVER, learning art fundamentals also "locks" you in terms of how you see art. once you learn how an arm is drawn correctly via a process of fundamentals, that is always how youll see and do it. if you try to draw an arm badly afterwards, you will always have to contrast it with your knowledge and consciously subvert it.

like picasso said, it took him four years to paint like raphael but a lifetime to paint like a child
