Bakhmut is a strategically important rail hub. It is very important for logistics purposes. If you understood even the basics of warfare you'd know that it was important and why it was important. Bakhmut's pre-war pop was like 70k or something if I recally correctly. Neither a huge place, nor a tiny hamlet either. But that's nothing to do with why it was important. It comes down to logistics.
