Russian Man Jumps From Kaliningrad Transit Train in Lithuania, Sparking Helicopter Search
Lithuanian border guards launched a helicopter search on Tuesday after a Russian man jumped from a special transit train as it traveled through the country en route to the Kaliningrad exclave.
The incident occurred near the border town of Kybartai. According to a statement from Lithuanian police, the passenger, a man born in 2004, was discovered missing around 6 a.m. after a train attendant found an open door. The train was approximately 25 minutes from its scheduled stop when the alarm was raised.
Officials confirmed the man had entered Lithuania legally under the simplified transit document scheme, which allows Russian citizens to travel between mainland Russia and its Baltic exclave.
A border guard helicopter was scrambled to search the area along the railway tracks, but as of Tuesday afternoon, no trace of the man had been found.
If located, the man faces a potential fine of up to €300 for violating transit rules. However, if it is determined he jumped with the intent to illegally remain in the European Union, he could be subject to criminal prosecution, according to the local news outlet "Volna."
