I have no doubt that some writer at GW that's a history buff probably must have put in small details based on deeper references like that into books, probably a few into actual army books by writers that succeed so much they're allowed leeway, most into Black Library "only the most dedicated of nerds will find out about this" material.
But the kind of decisions that are stuff like "Don't give the Vampire Counts any ranged weapons" or "Make me a new faction based off of Vampire Counts but as pirates" is not based off that writer's passion for the origins of the vampire mythos, it's based off of CEOs and shareholders chasing trends and going for KISS principle at all times. Those guys didn't decide on standards like those because that's what Bram Stoker used as inspiration, they decide it because that's what looks cool at that moment, and then it's the actual writer's job to work around it and find excuses.
Like, even now there's literally no reason given why Luthor Harkon can raise the dead so much fucking better than every other necromancer in the setting short of Nagash that they come back with their full personality and quirks. It's even more unexplainable that he still manages to do it despite being severed from the winds of magic. All of it just leads to the same reasoning: Some big fish at GW was watching Pirates of the Caribbean's numbers at the box-office and said "I want me some of that money, write an article into White Dwarf".
